Chapter Eight

Matt’s work erecting a small pole and attaching a pink flag printed with It’s a Girl in front of his office was interrupted by Payne and Neil Peterson.

Payne held out three boxes of doughnuts. “Perk and Pastries said you were passing out these instead of cigars. Told them we were on our way to see you.”

“You saved me a trip.” Matt offered the men a pink-iced confection. “Girl to go with those two rascally boys. Tammy stayed with the T theme. She now has Tess to go with Trevor and Tyler.”

“Congratulations. Guess you get some credit,” Neil wiped his mouth.

“The credit all goes to the mother.” Matt waved to some passers-by and held up the pastry box.

Sheriff Hawkins entered and patted his rotund stomach. “Don’t need one, but I should celebrate with you. How did you like being in the delivery room?”

“I’ve got marks from Tammy squeezing my arms.” Matt unbuttoned a cuff.

The sheriff motioned for him to put his sleeve down. “I’d never mention that to another living soul, especially a woman. You’ll get zero sympathy. I suggest you say that it was an amazing experience which gave you a new respect for all women.”

“I can do that.” Matt opened the second box.

Payne sidled up next to him. "Neil and I wanted a word, if you have a minute."

“Sure. Come on in.” Matt handed the box to the sheriff. “Act as host for me, will you?”

When Matt closed the door, both the Peterson men sat. This told Matt they expected the conversation to take more than a couple of minutes.

Payne started. “We didn’t want to go behind your back, but we will be talking to that Highsmith lady from Brinkman Realty.”

Matt leaned back in the chair. “You don’t have to ask my permission to talk to someone, but I’m curious about why you want to talk to her.”

Neil scooted forward on his chair. “We’re the only heirs, and we’re in a bit of a mess financially. We’d like for our parents to get this resolved quickly. We’re hoping they’ll give us our inheritance early.”

“I see. You’re in debt, and you want your parents to pay the loan.”

Neil nodded to his brother. “Not just me, Payne’s got money trouble too. We’re both going to lose our houses. We’ll have to declare bankruptcy.”

“You do understand the money will go to your parents, not you—if they agree to a sale.” Matt tried to keep his face impassive.

“They don’t need all that land or the money, and they should be living in some sort of assisted living. They’re old.” Payne rubbed his palms together.

“Could this be a private family matter?” Matt looked from one son to the other.

“You’re their lawyer. They trust you more than us.” Neil looked to Payne for confirmation.

"Have you discussed this with your parents?" Matt knew the answer but wanted these greedy men to squirm.

“No. We asked them to invest in the drone company, and they turned us down,” Payne explained.

“Which was a wise decision on their part.” Matt couldn’t resist a small smile.
